Electromyography (EMG)

Note: Currently EMG is available only at our Melrose Park location.

About EMG

Electro Neuro Diagnosis, unlike many routine medical tests, or a blood study, is an extension of the doctor’s physical examination. The electro neuro diagnostic evaluation should be performed by a physician who has had special training.

Electro neuro diagnostic studies can be helpful in evaluating muscle weakness, numbness, pain, and symptoms such as fatigue, cramps, and abnormal sensation. Electro neuro diagnostic studies can often define the pathophyisiology of disease of nerves and muscles, and the location of the dysfunction and its direction, severity and time course.

The time required to complete the study varies, but generally takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. There are no restrictions relative to activities before or after the test, and no permanent aftereffects.

EMG

During electromyography, the physician analyzes the electric activity in muscles by inserting a fine needle electrode into selected muscles. Needle insertion may cause temporary discomfort. The needle is not used for injection. The physician can determine whether the muscle is working normally by seeing the electric activity on a screen and listening over a loudspeaker. The needles are discarded after use to prevent infections.

NCV

To perform nerve conduction studies, the physician tapes small metal electrodes on the skin and applies a brief electric stimulus to one portion of a nerve. Nerve stimulation will cause a tingling sensation or your muscle may twitch. This shock is not harmful.

The shock given during NCV affects people in different ways, but most patients describe the feeling as a “tingling” sensation.

The benefits of EMG/NCV procedures far outweigh the risks.

What will I experience in an EMG or NCV?

Your medical history will be taken. Be prepared to describe any symptoms, past illnesses, medications you are taking, etc. Be sure to tell the physician if you are taking blood thinners, if you are highly susceptible to infections, if you bruise easily, have a pacemaker, a history of hepatitis, or if you have been infected by the AIDS virus.

After the exam, you may feel some very slight tenderness in the tested muscles. This usually lasts only a few hours and you will be able to return home or back to your hospital room.
